Surfing In Mal Pais, Costa Rica

The green rooms is ideally located to give you easy access to some of the worlds most beautiful beaches and waves.

The nearest and best surfing beach in the area is Playa Carmen just 5 minutes walk away from our place. This fun, walling beach break has it all. “I've been surfing this wave everyday for 3 months and it's never been flat. It's perfect for turns and airs and at low tide with a bit of swell it can produce some solid barrels”-Alan Stokes, British Champion. It has a number of peaks breaking along a 2km stretch of white sand with the best banks held in place by rock outcrops that can give long rides all the way to the beach. There are both right and left hand peaks in abundance offering something for everyone and it works on all tides perfect for surfing all day.

10 minutes walk north along the beach, past rock pools and coves superb for snorkling, and you come to Santa Teresa. This 1 km long beach also offers a number of peaks that tend to get hollower the further north you travel. It sometimes closes out at high tide although a low tide surf here can result in some excellent barrels and some heavy wipeouts when the swell picks up.

5 km north of the town is the stunning beach of Playa Hermosa where you can pitch up a hammock and get some peace and quiet whilst checking out the multitude of wildlife and, if your lucky, some empty waves. The jungle rolls right down to the beach where the only visible settlement is a couple of houses on the vegetation clad hill. On a good north swell a hollow right hand point reels off from the north end of the beach and and there are numerous sand bars holding lefts and rights with lower tides bringing the best chance of barrels.

For those looking for something heavier a big south swell can see the infamous Sunset Reef , a couple of kilometers to the south of Playa Carmen, lighting up and offering a grinding left hand barrel over very shallow rock. Alternatively you can take a trip to the otherside of the peninsular and you may be lucky enough to score one of the empty points or reefs of the Cabuya region.
